effects of work

I met two guys today. Their names were Frank and Joe. They were even taller than me. I liked Frank better, because he had a nicer character and wasn't so prickly.

I know a man named Frank.
He's beautiful.
He lives down my road and he is very old.
I always have the need to talk very loud when I speak to him, because I think his hearing is going. But, every time, he tells me that he can hear me perfectly fine and I needn't shout.
He is a very kind man and I wish I could say that I knew him better than I really do.

Frank and Joe? As in the Hardy boys?

I work with a Frank, and for the longest time he couldn't get my name right so I told him to call me Joe. (Aside: this shows how fed up with him I was. I thoroughly abhor and detest whenever people try to abbreviate my first name. Unfortunately, he is not a beautiful old man.) One of my bosses recognized the Hardy boys reference right away, which pleased me.

While working, one has a tendancy to do strange things. Frank and Joe (yes, it is a reference to the Hardy boys) are weeds. We found Joe first, and were pondering an option for a name. My foreman for the day came by, so I warned him to be careful with Joe. Frank we found later - and I just called him Frank because Frank goes with Joe.

Joel - do you pronouce your name as Jo-el, or Joel, by almost swallowing the e? I've been wondering.

Or, do you pronounce it like Jowul?

Yes. Considering that I spend my entire workday on a tractor, blissfully enveloped in my own world and entertained solely by whatever my fermenting brain comes up with, I understand perfectly how you might name a pair of weeds. I talk to my mowers all the time, mostly to apologize when I turn too tightly. (I've now made at least two drafts of a Maria-limerick, and never written them down…)

My name has been/is pronounced all three ways, actually--it depends who you talk to. 'Jole' happens when my brothers are in a hurry, and 'Jo-el' is how my grandfather used to say it. 'Jowul' is probably what I would say most often…

Have you actually found something to go with Geertsema? Probably using a middle name might be easier.

frank and joe
how tall they grow -
at least until
someone should kill
these poor old plants;
now catherine rants
like a member of the green party.

p.s. today I killed many weeds. Occasionally I enjoy being hypocritical.
